WHAT WE DO
Our research
Our research aims to improve how cancers are detected, monitored, and treated. We focus on several types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, esophageal, cervical, thyroid, and head and neck cancers.
Instead of relying only on traditional tissue biopsies, we study small signals released by cancer cells into body fluids. Using non-invasive samples such as blood, saliva, urine, Pap smears, and vaginal swabs, we look for molecular “fingerprints” that can provide important information about cancer.
By analyzing these signals, we hope to:
- Detect cancer at earlier stages
- Help guide treatment decisions
- Monitor how well treatments are working in real time
- Identify any remaining cancer cells after treatment
- Better predict the risk of cancer coming back
This approach can complement standard biopsies and give a more complete picture of how cancer changes over time. By working closely with patients and people with lived experience, we aim to develop research that is more patient-centered, accessible, and impactful.
Promoting patient participation in research
In addition to our scientific research, we are committed to working closely with patients and people with lived experience. We believe that research is stronger and more meaningful when patients are actively involved.
One of our goals is to make science easier to understand and more accessible. We do this by using clear, inclusive language when we share our research, so that patient partners can feel informed, confident, and engaged.
In April 2025, we partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society to host patient partners in our lab. During this visit, we shared what we are working on and explained key aspects of cancer research in an approachable way, while also learning from their perspectives and experiences.
We welcome individuals with lived experience to connect with us, share their stories, and contribute to shaping our research. Your insights help guide our work and ensure that our research remains patient-centered and relevant.
